Cantina Bolzano

The family cellar in the city's "cube".

A luminous cube with branching steel leaves that seem to grow from the slope – this is the new wine symbol of the city of Bolzano. The first KlimaHaus wine cellar in Italy (Alto Adige) opened in 2019, where grapes from the 224 members of the Kellerei Bozen consortium and winery are cultivated into the finest wines in Italy!

The winery's history, however, goes back more than 100 years. It was originally created by two separate wineries. In 1908, 30 farmers decided to establish a winegrowers' cooperative in the spa town of Gries. In 1930, 18 winegrowers around St. Magdalena Hill in the north of the town also decided to establish a cooperative. Both aimed to vinify and market the indigenous South Tyrolean Lagrein and Vernatsch wines. Gries specialized primarily in the Lagrein grape variety, which, thanks to its porphyry soils, produces strong, dark red wines. The St. Magdalena winery primarily produced St. Magdalener, an elegant, fruity red wine made from the Vernatsch grape.

The strengths of both wineries were combined in 2001 and merged to form the Bolzano Winery, becoming one of the leading companies in South Tyrol and even Europe. Finally, in 2018, the Bolzano Winery found a new, contemporary home. The first vintage was stored in the new production facility in the Moritzing district of Bolzano. The 20,000-square-meter production area is largely underground.

Every single element serves the quality of the wines, says cellar master Stephan Filippi: "Of course, the spacious facility with plenty of room for administration and wine shop is an improvement on the limited space in the center of Gries di Bozen, where the Bolzano winery was previously located."

The success story of Elena Walch and her daughters

Wilhelm Walch 1869

The Wilhelm Walch winery is located in the historic wine village of Tramin in South Tyrol, Italy's northernmost wine-growing region. Since its founding in 1869, it has been owned by the founding Walch family, who have had a decisive influence on the development of wine culture in South Tyrol.

The winery places a clear focus on the typical South Tyrolean wines and their local grape varieties – classic wines in a modern and uncomplicated style, complementing the extensive wine selection with international grape varieties. The wines demonstrate professional expertise in the cellar and rigorous work on the steep slopes at the foot of the Dolomites.

Founder Wilhelm Walch successfully ran a guesthouse and a schnapps distillery in Vorarlberg. When he wanted to expand his business but was denied permission, he moved with his five adult children to nearby South Tyrol. He purchased a former Jesuit monastery in Tramin and established the winery there. He demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit, buying vineyards in key locations in Tramin and Caldaro, and quickly grew the family business into one of the largest wineries in South Tyrol.

Today, the Walch family still runs the winery in its fifth generation. Over its nearly 150-year history, the historic building has been expanded and extended with modern new construction. Just as today, around 100 winegrowers supplied the family with their grapes and have been supplementing the family's own vineyards for generations.
